The Stanley Family
View Family Tree
Augustus Stanley arrived on PEI 1874 and married Louisa Shepard,
great-great granddaughter of David Shepard. Augustus Stanley was
the son of William Stanley and Celina Hollerand, and was born on
the 10 October 1861. Augustus’ father William had come from St.
Kitz in West Indies, but his mother Celina was from Nova Scotia.
The place of Augustus’ birth has conflicting documentation. The
1891 census, his place of birth is listed as Nova Scotia, but in
the 1901 census, Jamaica is listed his place of birth. His name
appears as “Augustine,” “Rennels Augustus” and as “Howard A” in
various census returns. The inscription on his tombstone is
“Rennell A.” He immigrated to PEI in 1874 and family history
relates that he entered PEI through the port in Georgetown. By
the 1880s, had settled outside Cardigan in Glenfanning (Seven mile road)
alongside a Shepard family. This is how he met his wife.
Augustus married Louisa Shepard on the 1 May 1881, in the presence of Donald O’Hanley and Louisa’s sister, Caroline Shepard. Augustus and Louisa had ten children and initially settled in Cardigan. Frederick’s PEI Directory for 1889, lists Gus Stanley as living in Glenfanning. McAlpine’s PEI Directory published in 1900, documents Augustus Stanley, a carpenter, as living in 19 Upper Great George Street. In 1901, the family are listed as living in Charlottetown, where Augustus was listed as a “carpenter,” Selina a “servant,” Robert a “laborer,” and Genevieve a “servant.”
As you will see in the succeeding charts, the Stanley name is still very visible on the Island and there are many descendants of Augustine Stanley and Louisa Shepard still living in the Charlottetown area.
