Baraka Is Back: Come Help Us Celebrate Our African Heritage

This year represents an important milestone for Prince Edward Island’s Baraka Festival, an annual celebration of African ancestry and heritage. The Festival marks its fifth anniversary in 2012.

 

As a special feature of the festivities, Baraka 2012 will host the first public screening of the DVD version of The Old Stock, a play based on Black Island history. The DVD launch will begin at 1:00p.m.

 

Other features of Baraka 2012 will include information displays, craft sales, music, drumming, hair-braiding, and special games and activities for children. Children’s’ band and dance group will be performing at Baraka. You can purchase African Foods throughout the afternoon.

 

For those interested in contemporary cultural and social issues, the program in “The Speakers’ Room” will feature presentations exploring aspects of the evolving Africa-Island association, ongoing now for more than 200 years.

 

Baraka is a free family event: there is no admission charge.

 

Confederation Centre of the Arts, The PEI Association of Newcomers to Canada, the G’ma Circle of PEI, and CUSO International, Farmers Helping Farmers. Funding provided through, the Province of PEI, Citizenship & Immigration Canada and the City of Charlottetown.
